EU Workshop on „Sustainable Chemistry –
Implementation of a Scientific Concept in Policy and Economy“

!Please note that the working language will be English!

15th & 16th May 2007
at Bundespresseamt (Federal Press Office), Berlin, Germany

The concept of Sustainable Chemistry represents an area of innovation, which not only preserves resources, but also stands for a development process in the chemical industry. Sustainable Chemistry aspirates to raise the stake of less dangerous chemicals as well as production of environmentally high-quality products from preferable renewable resources. This obviates emissions and excessive consumption of resources like energy and materials. The principle of Sustainable Chemistry comprises important elements in areas like environment, economy and society. Sustainable Chemistry deals with the whole life of intrinsic safe chemicals and products, including their production, processing, use and disposal.
Intrinsic safe chemicals and products are characterised by low toxicity to environment and human health and low persistence and accumulation potential. Thereby environment and human health are protected in the first place in the life of chemicals and socio-economic follow-up costs are avoided. Additionally, production of sustainable chemicals and products contributes to economic profit for innovative enterprises and thereby affords an opportunity for competitive advantage compared to production and marketing in old-fashioned concepts. This includes innovative concepts like chemical leasing and operation of (Quantitative) Structure-Activity Relationship ((Q)SAR).
The workshop shall tie in with all areas contributing to arrangement and ascertainment of sustainable chemical production. Starting from this, the boundary conditions and future actions for the application of the instrument of sustainable chemistry shall be discussed among experts. Furthermore, the conference shall provide the opportunity to agree on how to apply this concept for chemical policy, methods in production and processing and product policy – especially in respect to provisions relating to environmental aspects, as well as safety at work and consumer protection. The workshop aims for exchange of experiences on procedures and actions and provides a basis to discuss how integrated and interdisciplinary implementation options in the respective area could be weighed and elaborated.
Additionally, this event wants to strengthen the network for the players involved in development of Sustainable Chemistry, to present the opportunity to communicate concrete examples for industries and users. Therefore, an open and transparent dialog with the involved branches of industry, scientists and agencies shall be evolved. The presentation of the concepts of, and actions in Sustainable Chemistry shall promote both the transfer of information and the dialog between politics, science and industry and rise the public awareness.
